Gauss’s Box

Andy Sedlack
I can’t remember when I
found it, where I got it.

For as long as I can remember.
Looming, with its polished

alphabet tumblers
on simple gray box.

Back then I was
eager, hopeful

I tried every name
whose person

I could find.
Chasing the other

side of gray
without a clue.

I almost forgot
it in my

closet last winter
but it snuck out with a crash

following sweatpants.
And I couldn’t help but

try her name—
nope. Isn’t this

why I put it away?
There’ll be someone else.

There has to be a right someone
somewhere.

I’m not sure
nowadays

If I want to see its
insides.
