please be quiet

Maliya Ellis '19
What are you saying?
I can’t hear you over the--
Listen! -- birds’ sweet syrup sighs
Like shower mist
Again!-- dropping low to rest
And best crystallize on
Wind-blown sun-combed
Hair take
Care! Whisper now, the swallows are
Eavesdropping, grief-swapping
And their feathers stuck together
As pop-droplets of time
Scrape their nails down the
Valleys and alleys all
Filed with dark honey
Rich nectar on land, in the air bitter
Regret dark, dawning
On the swallow, falling hollow with a
Sh!
Sigh in a crescent-moon

And you think your tongue
Can paint galaxies.
