Stars from the Lighthouse

Abigail Davis '17
That night I walked past the empty houses
Past fields, on cliffs, staring over the sea
I passed no one at all, save two spouses.

On the outing, my nerves nearly got me
Before the part of me that is not flesh
Came to the lookout: place of stars and sea.

Sea leads to Africa, to Marrakech,
Places brighter than the horizon, black,
I stare into would otherwise suggest.

Sky leads to future and Heaven, the cracks
Between past and future, science and God,
Me and my grandparents, Sally and Jack.

But I’m not celestial, simply a rod.
Legs tie me to Earth: eyes, to the dashboard
Of heaven, the universe, the sky, God.
