Sounds of Summer

Caroline McCarthy '22
The sounds of summer for some
Are sounds of mischief and fun.
The grains of sand sliding between their toes
Swimming amongst friends and supposéd foes.

The smells of summer are of salt and sweet cream
The waves slithering into your deep dream
Although, for me the scent is all but fresh
Seeing through the lens of paint and mesh.

It smells of the heat seeping through an unfurnished house
The searing sounds of silence for lack of even a mouse
But we shan’t dwell on the stillness that a lonely house lends
When this new journey may bring us to unforeseeable ends
