We Turn

Caroline McCarthy '22
The GPS says
It’s a ten minute walk
We take the trek
Down the hill
Cross the street

We hear a whistle
We turn
We turn back
Bodies stiffened, pace quicker

We hear a horn beep
We turn
Make eye contact
Driver smirking
We turn back
Avoiding the eyes of the red car approaching

We turn 16 next week
We turn the corner
We turn back. Strange car, tinted windows

We can’t turn the tables
We’re just two girls
We don't have a knife
We don’t have mace

We can't turn the tides
We can't turn them away
We can't change.
The ways of the world

So we turn back,
Bodies stiffened
