Driftwood

Julia Murphy '23
There are some people
who emanate warmth
from their smiles
and
There are some people
you can’t let go of

We’re ships in an ocean
Stormy winds tip us
back and forth

I don’t know
how the waves feel
when they push your lantern
across the deck
And you don’t feel
my stomach jolt
when the salt blurs my eyes

But we’re waving
distress signals,
sending lifeboats
of resources we do
and don’t have to spare.

I am cold and hollow
to the bone
and my heart is pounding
an age-long elegy

But I am less alone

Because our tears
mix in with the sea
And we laugh at the
driftwood
flying in the air.

What else is there to do?
