Retribution

James Jeffery '22
I once dreamt of you and I in India.
Your smooth face and my beaten one
Slipping in and out of crowds.
We saw the Taj Mahal, and
I said it must have been the nicest present
A man had ever given a woman
You told me he had four other wives.
I hadn’t known that.

I thought about the bird we buried in Bombay.
Suffering surrounds us, secludes us
Weathered rocks and hollow trees
High-rises glimmering downtown
Shanties with seven souls in one shack
The Taj Mahal.

Tie your marital cord around my neck
And push me up against the marble walls,
Life owed and debt repaid
Silver ring throttling my finger as it swells
In my dreams, we were in India.
