That Kind of Love

That soft kind of love
In the morning when sun bathes over you both, and you understand the true meaning of the
word “content”
When you walk together and his hand brushes yours, three fingers whispering three simple
words
When it’s late in the night and he pulls you closer,
When you two watch a movie and you feel calloused hands massaging your neck, his breath on
your face
When you’re in the car and his head finds its way to your shoulder, and warmth spreads through
you.
When you wear his clothes and his scent consumes you and you feel so safe.
That beautiful kind of love
When you two stay up till sunrise, and you talk and you talk
When he finds you staring at the ceiling in the middle of the night and he asks about your
dreams
When he holds you tighter the more you push him away
When he holds you together when you break down
When he wipes the tears from your face and kisses away the pain
That broken kind of love
When he starts coming home later and you pretend you don’t wonder
When he inches farther away from you as the night progresses, and you think back to when he
used to think you were never close enough
When he comes home with lipstick on his collar and you pretend not to notice
When he tells you he is tired of the way you’re acting and you finally break down
When the porcelain plates you bought together shatter on the kitchen floor and you finally wake
up
When he comes back two weeks later to pick up his clothes and you can barely meet his eyes
When his car pulls out of the driveway and you fall to your knees because he’s not there to hold
you anymore
That old kind of love
When you pack up the house and you find the pictures you took on your two year anniversary
When you close your eyes and think about all of the things that can break a heart
When you open them again and think about the strength it takes to fix one
When you close the door on you and him
When you get in the car, your head falls back, and for a second, you let yourself imagine
What could’ve been
What might have been
When you turn your keys in the ignition and pull out of the driveway
Down the same road you two used to drive down
