April Showers
Jane Glover ’29 and Greta Lee ’28
Clara always said sunflowers were her favorite.
Genevieve liked marigolds, and Phoebe liked tulips.
Roses were always Maria’s favorite,
And daffodils were the ones for Hannah.
But, as for Eloise, she liked the flowers that nobody knew the name of. She’d pick the ones that grew in untouched pastures and mellow valleys, where only silk butterflies called home.
All of the other school girls did as they were told; they only picked flowers that would look pretty in a vase, or would intertwine nicely with their home’s sweet aroma. But, as for Eloise, she would sneak away from the girls to look for the hidden flowers, the ones whose colors were not quite as vibrant as Maria’s roses or Phoebe’s tulips, but had a kind of glow that radiated through the valley, sending rainbows in every direction as sunlight reflected under the refreshing raindrops that sat contently on each petal. If she looked closely, Eloise saw colors on these petals that no one else could see! A million shades of earthy green blended in with a watercolor mix of pinks, yellows, and whites. Eloise was enchanted by the dancing colors before her and the rhythm of the droplets falling from one petal to the next, that she did not hear the school girls calling out to her. The grass and ferns hid Eloise’s footprints underneath them and the vines and tree branches embraced Eloise in a warm hug. Her skin melted into greens, pinks, yellows, and whites and she danced with the colors and silk butterflies around her until Eloise lay down to rest forever with the flowers that only she knows the name of.
