Irregularity

Ruby Meyers '26
A pause
breaks the silence created in degrees,
layered up in edges and vertices: connections.
A path may lead to a sum of none,
so simple relations may never overcome
gaps set throughout, predefined by glaring differences.
However, those discrepancies come together, meeting on
edges — subtraction becomes a foundation for insights:
A diversity, illuminating inventiveness in everyone.

*I was inspired to write this poem by the graph theory concept of irregularity, which I have been studying in my Math Honors Seminar course. I crafted the lines such that a word between two others has the number of syllables equal to the difference between its framing words. In line 4, each word is one syllable in order to represent the simple equivalency of the irregularity of a path. In line 7, the structure breaks down after the word discrepancies, relating form to meaning.
